On the first story, there is a carved inscription that reveals when the pagoda was constructed.

In Gyeongcheonsa Temple, through the eternal turning of the wheel of dharma,
may the Emperor, Prince Imperial, and Empress live ong and be blessed,
in the third month of 1348. Offered by Kang Yung, the first-rank official, and Ko Yongbong,
the head of Jajeongwon Office. May this good deed be spread to all people,
so that they may be enlightened.

The Two names mentioned in the inscription – Kang Yung and Ko Yongbong – were the two largest donors for the construction of the pagoda, and both were strong supporters of China’s Yuan Dynasty, Kang Yung was from a powerful family with colose ties to the Goryeo royal court, while Ko Yongbong was a Goryeo eunuch who had played a key role in helping a Goryeo noblewoman to become Empress Gi of the Yuan Dynasty.

Thus, this inscription reveals that the pagoda was commissioned by Goryeo citizen who supported the Yuan Dynasty, and who wished for fortune and longevity for the Yuan dynasty’s “Emperor, Prince Imperial, and Empress.” At the time that the pagoda was built, the Yuan Dynasty controlled much of the region, and exercised it’s power by dictating the actions of the Goryeo court.

The stone pagoda from Gyeongcheonsa Temple has additional significance as an emblem of the historical destruction and theft of Korean cultural heritage.
In 1907, this pagoda was illegally dismantled and smuggled to Japan by Tanaka Mitsuyaki, the Japanese Minister of the Imperial Household.

The smuggling operation wa carried out despite from local citizens and politicians.
It immediately became headline news, with Daehan Maeil Sinbo newspaper publishing more than ten articles about the illegal export.

Furthermore, a British journalist named Ernest Thomas Bethel and an American journalist named Homer Hulbert, both active in Seoul, continuously covered this issue in various media outlets, including the New York Post and a prominent English-language newspaper in Japan.
Their adamant efforts to report the smuggling evenrually paid off, as public outcry eventually forced the Japanese government to return the pagoda to Korea in 1918.

After being returned to Korea, the pagoda was not immediately reassembled.
Finally, in 1960, the pagoda was restored and erected in an outdoor area at Gyeongbokgung Place, where it was kept until 1995. After being kept outside, however, the marble surface of the pagoda began to show signs of damage from acid rain.

Thus, in 1995, the pagoda was again dismantled for an extensive restoration project conducted by the National Research Istitute of Cultural Heritage, Korea.
After ten years or restoration, the pagoda was reassembled inside the new building of the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan.

When the pagoda was first restored in the 1960s, finials were added to the top.
However, it is not known whether these finials were true to the original design of the pagoda.
Thus, when the pagoda was reassembled inside the National Museum of Korea in 2005, the finials were removed.
